Regaining the Empathy of Living Spaces
First presented through an installation depicting a residential core, this research explores the themes that have guided the Architetti Artigiani Anonimi studio in developing the Molino Nuovo complex in Salerno — a mixed-use project incorporating residential and commercial spaces. The research investigates how architecture can restore an empathic relationship between people and their living environments. By analyzing dwelling typologies throughout history, the study identifies fundamental principles for redefining spaces as shelters — physically, morphologically, and functionally — while avoiding the alienation of humans from nature. In this process, Mediterranean vernacular architecture serves as a guiding reference.
Experiments in Architecture and Micro-Architecture
The approach of Architetti Artigiani Anonimi is rooted in a critical analysis of both historical and contemporary architecture.
This project unfolds in two phases:
1. The first phase focuses on identifying and developing architectural elements that enhance the emotional connection between people and their living spaces, thereby contributing to physical and psychological well-being. The research explores micro-architectural components such as color, light, form, and proportion, which influence perception. It also extends to macroarchitectural and environmental factors, including the morphology of building envelopes, bioclimatic comfort, electromagnetic field reduction, and the use of ecological, locally sourced materials. These principles draw inspiration from Mediterranean vernacular architecture, recognized for its intrinsic bioclimatic intelligence.
2. The second phase places human experience at the center of the project, outlining key principles for reinterpreting the concept of dwelling as an intimate and identity-defining space. Architetti Artigiani Anonimi seeks to reclaim an archetypal residential model—one that fosters a meaningful dialogue between people and their environment. The result is an architectural vision that, while adapted to the demands of the contemporary real estate market, retains an inner strength derived from its fundamental principles, guiding both functional choices and formal solutions.
