Arab Influences in a Contemporary Mediterranean Concept of Living
Amalfi, Italy
This project involves the restoration of part of Palazzo Proto in Amalfi’s Capo Croce district, also known as the Sant’Antonio district — the town’s highest point, characterized by narrow winding streets, stepped pathways, and whitewashed houses reminiscent of an Arab casbah. The historical influence of Arabic architecture in Amalfi is reinterpreted in a contemporary language, using local materials: pure geometric motifs painted on maiolica, hand-printed fabrics and paper, metal meshes, finely crafted ironwork, material inlays, bas-reliefs, and glazed ceramic furnishings. Rather than blending styles, the project follows a philosophy of clear and balanced material combinations, maintaining a sense of harmony and continuity.
